Sri Maha Bodi

The Buddha attained enlightenment in 588BC at Gaya Uruwela. The tree that gave shade to the Bodhisattvas was a Bo tree. The southern branch of the Bo tree was bbrought to ceylon by king Dharmashoka by his daughter Sangamitta theraniya around 274-232AD. King Devanampiyatissa landed at the then harbor called Dambakolapatuna in the North of Sri Lanka at what is now know as Kankasanthurai and sailed to the Bodhi branch on board the ship on wich ven. Then the tree was planted where it is today. This place was marked by Arah ath Mahinda tero who came to this ccountry before the Bo tree was pplanted before the tree was planted. King Devanampiyatissa ssurrounded the tree with a protective well. The veneration of the Sri maha bodhi was maintained by every king who ruled in Sri Lanka This sacred tree which is addressed by names such as Sri maha bodi,Jayashrimahabodhi etc.is worshipped by all the people of sri Lanka .

The History of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is one of oldest settlement in Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is also the capital of Sri Lanka.It was used as the capital around 500BC. Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for about 1500 years.The city bega as an ancient village.It is said that anuradhagama was built by Anuradha,a brother qeen Bhaddakachchayana. After king Pandukabhaya made Anuradhapura the capital. The old city of Anuradhapura had 3zones nnamely Ethulunuwara,Pitinuwara and poojanuwara. There is evidence that this ancient city of Anuradhapura was visited by Greek, Roman and Chinese tourists. Anuradhapura was ruled by 90 kings and some of the most famous kings.
